Netflix on Apple TV 2: “An error occurred loading this content”

First-world problem.
First-world problem: Netflix on Apple TV

This problem has plagued us for a few months. Each time we start watching Netflix on our Apple TV 2, it stops and throws up this message after about 20 seconds.

We have two Apple TV 2 units on two different televisions, and it happens on both of them. Netflix on Google Chromecast, netflix.com, my phone, and my Nook, all work perfectly.

It’s definitely a problem with the Apple TV units.

I have searched around for solutions, and certain fixes seem to work for some people, but there are many folks who still have the problem.

Restarting the device doesn’t help. All updates have been applied. I have even reset the devices completely, to no avail.

Anyone else having this problem? Anyone know a solution?

IMG_20140606_194306For those of you keeping score at home, these are the things that have been happening around here.

First, Rachael is pregnant with a boy. He is due on Halloween and, needless to say, we are super excited. Gray and Dax are excited too, though each in their very different ways: Dax outwardly, Gray more inwardly. We do have a name picked out for the little fella, but it being a quest that doesn’t necessarily end until the day he pops out, we thought we’d hold off on the big reveal for a little bit 😉

Second, we are moving! We decided to find a place that is a little more conducive to having a baby. We love our current house, but with features such as a 30 foot high deck, a front yard next to a frequently traveled road, and a balcony overlooking the living room, we decided something a little safer would be better.

Our house was only on the market 10 days before it went under contract, and we soon put a bid in on a new one. That should all be going down in July, so we are preparing for a move.

Third, my parents are having a low-key 50th wedding anniversary today, so a big WHOOP WHOOP to them. They may have a juggalo-style celebration with their neighbors tonight, from what we heard.

Fourth, Gray graduated from 5th grade last week. He will be venturing to middle school this fall, and I am still completely blown away about that fact. Dax will be in 3rd grade…also hard to believe!

So that’s that for now…more soon.

Don’t Fear The Bacon, Baby Stormtrooper

It’s been a while since I posted some of the random coolness I’ve found around the Internet, so I thought I’d give you dear reader(s) some things to look at. Maybe your life will be changed, and maybe it won’t. Either way, I thought these were interesting for various reasons, and maybe you will too.

I’m not sure how scientifically reliable this is, but if you are a bacon lover and you are looking for some justification to keep eating it without feeling guilty, you might find this article about the alleged myth that nitrates and nitrites are bad for you. I guess this means hotdogs are safe now too, which is great, because I happen to love eating animal lips.

Awww

This collection of Stormtroopers doing awesome things is quite amusing. I’ve been thinking about starting something similar involving the Stormtrooper helmet my brother gave me. Stay tuned.

There is nothing like arguing on the Internet, as it is the neverending pleasure that just keeps on giving. This Illustrated Book of Bad Arguments helps you learn some logical concepts and fallacies in a very approachable ways. Maybe it will help you kick your arguing up a notch.

This Digital Attack Map lets you see all the active Distributed Denial of Service (DDos) attacks going on around the world at any given time. In a very snappy way it shows you who is getting hit, who is attacking, and how big the attacks/hits are. Pretty interesting (hint: hover your mouse over the moving balls. Heh.)

This listing of Google Voice Actions is extremely useful. Did you know that you can instruct your phone or computer to “Listen to TV” and have it tell you what you are currently watching? OK, that may not be that useful but there are other commands that certainly are.

And lastly, I can’t help but bash Facebook a little. It has become so useless for companies, bands, small businesses, or anyone else trying to communicate to people with a Facebook Page. And it is only going to get worse. It’s time for you people to look at Google+ already.

Words and Sayings That Annoy Me

Hate is such a strong word, and to be honest, it’s not that this list of sayings is something that really keeps me up at night. These words and sayings just really irk me for some reason. Several of these sayings seem to have been born from the Internet era, often being found in tweets, Facebook updates, and forum postings. Others are sayings I’ve heard throughout the years. Either way, I’d love to see them put to rest!

“This band is killing it.”

Having been a member of many a band, it’s nice to know that people are into what you are doing it, but this saying turns what could have been an otherwise nice compliment about a musician’s skills, performance, and/or songwriting prowess into a fraternity brother’s simplistic assessment of the situation. If you really like the way a band is sounding and you are at their live show, cheer, clap, and buy their records and t-shirts. If you feel the need to make your friends jealous by bragging about it on Twitter, try something more erudite such as “This band puts on an amazing live show. You should be here next time.”

“Just sayin’.”

This one has annoyed me perhaps more than any other, and it’s been a trend that spans just about every online social outlet. All I really need to do here is quote a recent Bill Maher ‘New Rule’:

New Rule: If you end your tweet with the words “Just sayin’,” then you’ve just tweeted something incredibly shitty.

No one ever tweets, “Had a nice lunch with my sister. Just sayin’.” It’s always, “Mexicans are what’s wrong with this country. Just sayin’.” How about this? You drop the “just sayin’” and we’ll go ahead and assume that’s what you were just saying based on the fact that you just said it.

“Wow. Just. Wow.”

This saying is used in an attempt at expressing one’s disbelief at something they just saw or read. Often found in the comments of Facebook posts, it has become the de-facto statement when someone is thinking, “Gee, that is really awful/terrible/horrific and I feel very strongly about it, but I don’t really feel like typing any of that so I’ll just leave this cliche here as an attempt to let you know that I do care.”

“Welcome to my world.”

People say this when you’ve expressed a frustration at something they tend to deal with a lot. It is a great way of diverting the topic of conversation away from the person who just expressed an honest emotion about a situation, and toward the person who likes being the center of attention.

“Son!”

Pronounced “suuuuuun,” this is a uniquely Southern saying which has transgressed beyond gender boundaries and is commonly heard in bluegrass picking circles. It’s the southern version of “Awesome, dude.” It can also be applicated as a salutation or any attempt at affirmation. It is a simplistic way to exonerate a thoughtful expression of approval. Who has time to say, “You just did an amazing job at singing that song,” when you can just get away with, “soooooon!”

Needless to say, this term has nothing to do with actual mother/son or father/son relationships.

“Think outside the box.”

Originating from the “9 dot” puzzle, this saying has been so overused that it has become its own box.

“That’s above my pay grade.”

That’s a cop out if I ever heard one. Do it anyway.

“Cosplay.”

This is an attempt to redescribe something which is completely juvenile in nature as something that is OK for adults to do. It pretty much fails in that it still means ‘grown people trying to squeeze into superhero costumes.’ I will say that I’d be the first person in line to own an authentic stormtrooper costume, but I will also be the first person to acknowledge the childhood fantasy being played rather than trying to cloak it in some sort of sophisticated homage to a canon of literature.

“I know enough to be dangerous.”

Do you? Then by all means, put down the keyboard.

Should You Use A Carousel?

Carousels are this decade’s <blink> tag.

Carousels, also known as ‘sliders’ or ‘slideshows’ on your home page give the appearance of excitement and dynamics. Apparently, however, they accomplish nothing, and anything you put inside them tends to get ignored by your visitors. I am guilty of having built many websites with carousels on the homepage, and for a while I thought they were a good idea, but I still had in the back of my mind somewhere that they were just not a very smart way to present content. Now the evidence is appearing to confirm this.

Check this out for a good explanation and some examples.

Renegotiate your cable bill today

As a long-time customer of Charter cable for TV and Internet service, I’ve had many a battle with them over negotiating better deals. One piece of advice I’ve learned over the years is invaluable: call every 6 months to renegotiate your deal with them.

I did this just today, actually. What I learned this time is that they no longer offer special 6 month or 12 month rates on things — something they dropped when their new CEO took over in July, 2012.  Apparently these deals would inevitably lead to a price hike in peoples’ bills once the deal ran out, and that in turn led to angry customers. Anger leads to hate. Hate leads to suffering.

Granted, they should have been aware that their deal was going to expire, but who actually bothers to pay attention to that?

Now, Charter offers levels of bundled services. What I got today is great: every single channel they offer (except PPV and adult channels) for the same price I’d been paying, which only included about 1/2 of the channels.

Why does this matter? Because basketball season is starting and because I was losing out and didn’t even know it.

Lesson to learn here: call your cable company at least twice a year and find out what you could be saving on.
