The Fun Doesn’t Stop

In continuation of the Free Music theme, I found a link to the 100 Song CD. This CD contains 100 songs, an amazing feat in and of itself. True, they happen to be short songs, but they are by good bands.

You can even download the cover artwork and jewel case inserts to print out.

And in other news, as soon as I figure out how to upgrade to gdlib 2 on my web server without screwing up every site I host, I will have the new picture gallery up and running. Anyone have any suggestions?

MP3 Wonderland

By way of Scrubbles I found this absolutely terrific site called the 365 Days Project.

One MP3 a day… for one year.

The MP3’s offered are something else. From two unknown women singing irritatingly close to in-tune with each other to Fred Waring and the Pennsylvanians (who?) singing “Fo Fum Fi Fee”, this collection of found songs will be keeping me entertained for some time.

And from Kevin Rose I found some ways to search Google that bring up loads of open directories containing MP3’s for download, among other things. I found that entering the name of an artist/band before the search string will tailor the results to your liking. I was suprised to find mostly unheard of artists and music rather than directories full of pop tunes. I am betting the RIAA knows this trick too.

The Evidence Mounts

I can’t count how many viruses, worms, and security patches it has taken for this to occur, but the evidence mounts against Internet Explorer. The buzz all over the internet this week is that security experts everywhere are recommending people use a different browser.

Read about it at IT Week, Business Week, Microsoft-owned Slate.com, and even the Department of Homeland Security’s US-CERT site.

I know that this all seems great for the efforts of Firefox, Opera, and other browsers to regain a piece of the browser market pie, but I’m afraid it will take a lot more than this for the average user to stop using something they are used to. Many people don’t even know that alternative browsers exist. It may take something as drastic as a virus that erases or disables Internet Explorer for anything to really change. I’d like to think not, but it may.

Update: Here too 😀

Getting Better

It’s finally starting to look organized around here. I couldn’t sleep with the haphazard design I whipped together for this site, so I bit the bullet and stayed up late last night creating an improved look. It still needs work, but at least it’s not completely shameful right now.

Importing Undoable

It looks like importing all of my posts from Geekamongus will be difficult, to say the least. Really though, I can live with that, as this gives me a chance to start fresh. Much of the Geekamongus content wouldn’t have made much sense here anyway.

Now the tasks left at hand are setting up a new image gallery and making this place look better.

I gotta say, I am highly impressed with this WordPress software so far…

Brand Spankin’

I have finally turned this site into a blog. The infamous Geekamongus will soon be archived and moved here for your historical pleasure. However, don’t count on seeing my fingernail clipping collection, as I have moved past that stage in my life. I recently started collecting my son’s fingernail clippings instead.

Yes, this page looks crappy so far, but I’ll get it down to something more enjoyable shortly.

The big news of the day is that my article on Mozilla Firefox 0.9 went live today at Digital Web Magazine. I am excited to be published for the first time, especially next to people whom I consider gods and goddesses in the Internet realm, and look forward to continuing my writing endeavors. Read the article and let me know what y’all think.

Now…I’m off to convert 3 years worth of B2 posts to WordPress…wish me luck 😉

Is this any better?

The Date Be: 07.12.02

I reworked the PHP script that was parsing different style sheets depending on what browser you have. I also reworked the style sheets themselves to provide a better layout that validates correctly. Hopefully, it is more easily readable. Furthermore, I reworked the code to be valid XHTML Strict in an effort to get everything looking as it should.

Please let me know if anything still looks weird for you. I have yet to test this on a Mac using Netscape or Mozilla, so I am curious if it is OK.

The Mozilla browser will still display a cooler looking page, being more compliant to the rules of Cascading Style Sheets. Internet Explorer won’t have as many neat little effects, such as fixed background images within divs, but it should look OK.

There is still no support for 4.x browsers. The site should be OK in text browsers though.

Now my only task left is to add my photo collection again.

Yeehaw.

Of Cats And Calvins

Originally posted 07.12.2002

Well, with the advent of my new web site statistic tracking script I have learned that my average number of unique visitors per day has shot from about 40 all the way up to about 1200. It happened within about 3 days. Pretty amazing, if you ask me. So, welcome freak lovers. I hope you find something that entertains you here.

On with some linkage. In today’s episode, we find a medly of links that range from the usual bathroom humor so enjoyed by people the world over (as well as readers of this website), to political shenanigans that are quite scary.

First, the Aquariass is a creative invention that makes use of all that extra water that usually wastes space in the tank of your toilet. I can see how this ‘toiletarium’, as it were, would be especially entertaining for those of us who can stand up when peeing. I’m not sure what use it would be for those who have to sit down.

Next we have some hilarious pictures of signs, labels, and other verbage written in “Engrish”, as the Japanese say. One of my favorites was the label on a loaf of bread made by “Batard”. It reads: “All of contents are no additional. It’s burned to a crisp with all our heart“. Sometime I think we send the Japanese special English dictionaries just for our amusement.

One of the funniest things I have seen in a while is at Cat-Scan, where people send in images of their cats sitting on their scanners. I am going to have to try this with Blue and Carlton.

For years now, images of Calvin (of Calvin & Hobbes fame) peeing on various items have adorned the back of pickup trucks all over the Southern United States. From Dale Earnhardt haters to those that think Chevy is better than Ford, Calvin has become an outlet for rednecks everywhere to say to the world, “Hey you, I feel so strongly about the inferiority of your favorite product or NASCAR driver that an iconic representation of comic strip character Calvin urinating on a representation of said product or NASCAR driver accurately portrays the anguish and indignation that burns withing the deepest realms of my soul“. And guess what? Someone has made this website to keep track of these imortant messages within our society.

As if a collection of Calvin peeing stickers isn’t enough to make you wonder how much time some people have on their hands, there is an extensive website dedicated to the collection of photos and information about Airline Foods. I found it interesting that American West Airlines serves a single club cracker and a can of soda for breakfast. There is even a picture of it. I’m sure they are cutting down on the extravagant meals so that they can provide you with better airplane mechanics.

I may have posted this before, but here is another important breakdown of the PATRIOT Act and how it impacts your daily life. A must-see for everyone.

Yeehaw. I said the words “peeing” so many times in this post that I’m sure I will be getting hits from people who searched for weird things in Google again. Don’t worry…I will keep you posted.

Yeehaw.

Once again, the masses have spoken

I got enough email about bringing back the toenail and fingernail collection that I did it. What the heck…I will wave my freak flag high. If people don’t like the fact that I collect my fingernails, there is something wrong with them, not me.

So enjoy them once again. It’s all in the name of fun.

Edit:
Due to some of the remarks I found on some discussion forums regarding my nail collection and what people would do to me if they ever saw me on the street, I decided to remove the pictures. Some people seem to take the fact that I collect my fingernails way too seriously and have no sense of humor. Because of these people, the pictures are gone. Threats on my life are not worth it.

Fame, at last

According to my website visitor logs, my nail collection has become quite a popular “gross link of the day” on weblogs and discussion fourms all over the world. To see what I mean, just go here or here or here or here. There are a lot more.

Some people obviously missed the point and think I need to be slapped. Some people think I collect other people’s nails. Some people think I’m a weird creep. I might argue with the creep part.

I need to set the record straight: They are all my nails. No one else’s. Licking someone else’s nails would be gross.

Anyway, I will keep you dear readers posted on this developing situation.
