Chatham’s Law & Chatham’s Razor

I’ve been doing a lot of philosophical thinking about the cyber security and online privacy world I live in. Recurring themes I’ve noticed across the industry, which I’ve figure out how to reduce to simple summaries:

Chatham’s Law says:

Online privacy and convenience are inversely proportionate: every bit of privacy gained costs a bit of convenience (time, friction, or both).

Chatham’s Razor says:

When a service claims convenience, assume the convenience was purchased with your data, not offered for free. When choosing between “they built this to help me” and “they built this to learn about me,” assume the latter.

Can you coin your own laws and razors? Why not 🤷‍♂️
